Academic Year Teen Internship Program

Make a difference in the lives of older adults as a DOROT Teen Intern!

Each school year DOROT welcomes high school students in ninth through twelfth grades to intern afterschool one afternoon a week. This is a unique opportunity for ongoing community service that meaningfully connects teens with older adults in a variety of intergenerational activities. Teens receive high-quality training and service hours. Applications are closed for the Spring Semester, we are accepting applications for our virtual program:

Spring Opportunities Started March 25th:

DOROT Teen Internship Program in Manhattan

Join the Academic Teen Internship Program on the Upper West Side of Manhattan for our winter semester. Choose one of the programs below to volunteer one afternoon per week starting March 25th - May 16.

Home Visit

Interns are paired together to visit a DOROT older adult who lives on the upper west or east side for 45-60 minutes of friendly conversation and companionship. The visit is scheduled between 4 PM and 6 PM. Choose one afternoon per week: Mondays-Thursdays, 4:00-6:00pm)

Intergenerational Chess

Share your love chess and make a friend across the chess board! Each week older adults learn and play chess with a group of Teen Interns. Mondays, 4:30-6:00pm at DOROT

Tech Help

Older Adults bring their own device and meet with one of our Teen Interns for one hour to ask technology questions, receive support, and make a new connection! . Wednesdays, 4:00-6:00pm at DOROT

Modern board Games

Put your devices aside and connect across the table with modern board games. In this workshop High School Students and older adults (65+) are all learners, discovering new games with the help and guidance of a teacher. Join us to see what the gaming community has been up to in recent years with exciting strategic games that improve problem-solving and social skills and keep us sharp. Over 6 weeks we will alternate, dedicating one session to learning a game and the next session to playing it and discovering its depth. All are welcome, no knowledge or experience needed. . Thursdays 4:30 PM - 6:00 PM, March 28, April 4, 11, 18, May 2 and 9 at DOROT

 

There is NO CHARGE for participation in DOROT’s Teen Internship Programs.

Age: High school students. 

Time Commitment: Interns volunteer one afternoon per week, Monday through Thursday. Each activity has a unique start date and time commitment. 

Location: In-person at DOROT’s office at 171 West 85th Street or in the senior's home.  

Requirements: Application and group interview in-person.
