DOROT's mission is to alleviate social isolation among older adults and provide services to help them live independently as valued members of the community. Since 1976, DOROT has been serving the Jewish and wider community, bringing the generations together in a mutually beneficial partnership of older adults, volunteers, and professionals. Intergenerational engagement is central to DOROT's mission. They mobilize 7000 volunteers of all ages each year through a wide array of programs conducted on-site, in the home and in the community. DOROT has received national recognition for their innovative and impactful programs. As a Generations United, "Program of Distinction" and the winner of the Eisner Foundation's prestigious "Eisner Prize for Intergenerational Excellence," DOROT continues to be a leader in the field of aging and intergenerational programming.
DOROT, Inc. seeks a proven, ambitious, dynamic and inspiring strategic leader with superior relationship skills and demonstrated success in building capacity and increasing revenue to become its Chief Advancement Officer (CAO). The successful candidate must have an authentic passion for the mission, demonstrated success as a strategic revenue builder, and be a highly articulate communicator skilled at making a compelling case for organizational support.
Reporting to the Executive Director, and collaborating with the Board of Directors, Senior Management Team, staff and volunteers, the Chief Advancement Officer will direct DOROT's Development, Marketing and Communications functions, shaping and implementing the organization's overall revenue and brand building strategy. A critical priority for the CAO will be to expand a $9 million annual budget and develop a comprehensive communications strategy that increases visibility and capitalizes on DOROT's brand recognition and impact in the community.
As a member of the Executive Tearn, the CAO provides strategic and operational leadership across the organization, assisting in establishing organizational standards of excellence and working collaboratively with the Senior Management Team. The CAO will build, develop and manage a current team of seven.
In addition to providing internal leadership, the CAO will expand the reach and influence of DOROT through interactions with public, private, and philanthropic leaders.
Fundraising and Relationship Management
Marketing/Communications and External Engagement Responsibilities
- Develop and implement an integrated and comprehensive fundraising strategy and plan that will generate short and long-term results as well as deepen and diversify the funding base.
- Work in partnership with the Executive Director, Board of Directors and Development staff to raise the necessary funds to operate the organization.
- Work closely with the Executive Director and senior leadership to articulate the case for each program's funding priorities, and match those with specific individual donor and foundation interests. Direct all aspects of DOROT's development efforts including:
- Major Gifts: Responsible for cultivation, direct solicitation and stewardship of major gift, high-net-worth donors and prospects.
- Foundations: Supervise the Director of Institutional Giving who is responsible for the management of all foundations and corporations.
- Planned Giving: Further develop a legacy program to expand current bequest revenue and charitable gift annuity program.
- Web and Direct Mail: Oversee all aspects of the direct mail campaign and online fundraising efforts.
- Event Planning: Manage and enhance donor events - lunches, annual benefit, parlor meetings.
- Closely monitor all key fundraising metrics and respond accordingly.
- Staff the Development Committee of the DOROT Board of Directors, and work closely with the Development chair(s) to actualize the development plan for the organization.
- Staff the Nominating Committee to help identify and recruit new members to the Board of Directors.
- Work with individual members of the Board to identify donor prospects and execute other appropriate development tasks.
- Staff the Executive Director's development efforts including: setting strategy; establishing appointments; and overseeing and managing stewardship activities.
- Work closely with Chief Financial Officer to maintain, update and leverage the Raiser's Edge development database.
Internal Management Infrastructure and Team-Building
- Responsible for all aspects of marketing, branding, public relations and communications for the organization including all agency publications, website, social media, marketing materials, media relations and DOROT's online presence.
- Lead the institutional marketing of the organization to ensure effective overall positioning of DOROT before the public and within its field; use public relations, community outreach, publications and other DOROT marketing tools to promote growth in program visibility and revenue.
- Oversee the design and implementation of a comprehensive communications and marketing strategy and plan for DOROT.
- Serve as a strategic partner and resource for program leadership staff in the creation of all collateral marketing, outreach and program materials.
- Ensure consistent messaging and branding in all print and online donor communication vehicles; provide strategic and marketing oversight to all donor materials, and strategic support on the full range of external communications.
- Manage all aspects of the development and marketing functions, including decisions regarding: strategic direction, cross-departmental relationships and budgeting.
- Build a strong and cohesive advancement team through recruitment; professional development; performance management; motivational leadership; and team management that promotes excellence and intra- and interdepartmental teamwork.
- Oversee the refinement of Development and Communications operating guidelines, policies, and procedures.
- Evaluate and drive the use of new technology funding vehicles including social media and eGiving.
- Working closely with the IT team, provide strategic insight of DOROT's CRM system to build a best practices environment to support the development and external engagement efforts.
- Create a climate that promotes respect for others and acceptance of alternative ideas and approaches, as well as the highest ethical standards and practices.
A thought partner to the Executive Director, the Chief Advancement Officer will have the vision, capacity, and experience to understand and balance an array of needs. S/he will be an intuitive planner with a demonstrated ability to set priorities, and develop and implement thoughtful, clear, action oriented growth strategies for DOROT.
- Strategic thinker and visionary leader with demonstrated ability to build comprehensive highly efficient and effective Development and Communications strategies.
- An established leader with at least 10 years of relevant non-profit development experience, primarily in major gifts, as well as demonstrable achievements in management, both strategic and operational.
- Proven track record in all aspects of fundraising, including annual giving, major gifts, foundation support, planned giving, online giving and special events, with the ability to effectively integrate these methodologies to their maximum potential. Proven success in building and maintaining relationships with major donors and foundations and most importantly asking for and closing major gifts.
- Demonstrated experience creating and implementing a comprehensive marketing and communications plan.
- Proven ability to craft and articulate a case for support for DOROT and its individual programs, both written and visual.
- Thorough understanding of the PR, media and digital landscape with the ability to create and oversee a sophisticated marketing effort to raise the visibility of DOROT, their programs and the issue of social isolation.
- Outstanding verbal and written communication skills with the ability to convey DOROT's mission and effectiveness with passion, skill and grace.
- A leadership presence with strong interpersonal and management skills and experience working successfully with a diverse staff and lay leadership.
- Ability to work independently with enthusiasm, imagination, energy and the drive to succeed.
- The successful candidate will demonstrate passion and commitment for the mission of DOROT and have a clear understanding and appreciation for the Jewish values and traditions embodied by DOROT.
- Must have an energetic and entrepreneurial spirit with good instincts and sound judgement with a demonstrated ability to successfully plan and execute organizational strategies, while not being afraid to "roll up one's sleeves" to get the job done.
- Well-developed organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail and follow through; ability to manage multiple projects and priorities.
- Success in increasing the effectiveness of advancement staff through established objectives, performance standards and quantifiable benchmarks.
- A strong work ethic, ability to maintain and model high personal, ethical, and professional standards, as well as an outgoing and positive personality with creativity, patience, a sense of humor and perspective.
- Excellent computer skills, including Microsoft Office and Raiser's Edge.
- A Bachelor's degree is required; advanced degree a plus.
