Meals and Wellness
Proper nutrition and physical activity are vital for everyone, and become even more important as we age. DOROT’s taste–tested, home–delivered frozen meals are available to frail seniors who cannot prepare meals for themselves, whether on a short– or long–term basis. Our wellness classes, offered at DOROT’s headquarters on the Upper West Side, feature exercises, lectures, and workshops geared specifically to seniors’ needs. Participants in both programs attest to a distinct improvement in the quality of their lives.
Kosher Meals for the Homebound
For seniors who have difficulty shopping and cooking, DOROT home–delivers nutritious, frozen glatt kosher meals every week. Seniors choose from a wide–ranging menu (including accommodations for a low–salt diet), then heat and eat at a convenient time. Volunteers make weekly contact with clients to establish their menu choices.
For seniors who are recovering from an illness or are back from the hospital and in urgent need of prepared food, DOROT will home–deliver nutritious, frozen glatt kosher meals to foster a speedy recovery.
There is nothing like the taste of traditional Sabbath foods—grape juice, challah, gefilte fish, chicken soup, etc. Through the Lillie Schussheim Chaffkin Shabbos Meals program, DOROT delivers these freshly cooked meals to seniors’ homes every Thursday.
Health and Wellness Classes
DOROT’s exercise, nutrition, relaxation, and lifestyle classes boost seniors’ energy, develop flexibility, and increase strength and endurance. We offer a wide variety of opportunities to improve health, try new activities, and make friends. Exercise and relaxation classes include Chinese exercise, weight training, light dance, meditation, and yoga. Lifestyle and nutrition classes include falls prevention, memory improvement, healthy eating, and weight loss. All classes take place at DOROT’s headquarters.

Once a week on Tuesdays, seniors gather on DOROT’s seventh floor for a brown bag lunch with plenty of pleasant conversation about current events and personal stories, with occasional guests presenting poetry and music. In warm weather, participants can enjoy the view from DOROT’s rooftop garden. Beverages are provided by DOROT.
