Giving Thanks Together

They came by bus and subway, taxi and Access-A-Ride, many leaning on walkers, canes, or the arms of DOROT volunteer escorts. On Sunday, November 22, 275 seniors attended DOROT’s annual Thanksgiving Banquet at Congregation Rodeph Sholom. They enjoyed a full turkey dinner served by 100 DOROT volunteers, sang, and danced to the music of a live trio. A joint performance by Kol DOROT, DOROT’s senior chorus, and the Ramaz Middle School Chorus was enthusiastically received, as were remarks by visiting officials: Susie Stern, Chair of the New York State Commission on National and Community Service; State Senator Eric Schneiderman; State Assemblymember Linda Rosenthal; and City Councilmember Gale Brewer. As the seniors exited after the program, each received a Chanukah gift package to bring home with them. According to senior Jewel G., “It was a wonderful party down to the last detail. It was a sensation.”

At the same time, 247 volunteers delivered Thanksgiving dinners and Chanukah gift packages to seniors at their homes and stayed for a visit as part of the Thanksgiving and Chanukah Delivery. Both seniors and volunteers expressed appreciation for the intergenerational visits. “It was so nice getting to meet new people and hear their stories,” said volunteer Annie L.

DOROT is grateful to all the volunteers who made this event so memorable for our seniors; to The Jack and Pearl Resnick Foundation for its generous support of the Banquet; to Bryna and Joshua Landes for their generous support of the Meal Delivery in loving memory of their uncle, Marvin Sochet; and to Holly and Sam Merrin for endowing the Chanukah Package Delivery.
