Abraham Diaz — Teen Internship Program
How long have you been a DOROT volunteer?
I have been a DOROT volunteer for about a year now.
How did you get involved with DOROT?
During my freshman year of high school I decided to volunteer. I wanted to find something that I would enjoy while making a difference and perhaps bringing joy to others. After searching on the internet and listening to recommendations from family members, I decided that DOROT would be the best place for me. I knew that I would feel comfortable helping seniors because I often visit my grandmother to spend time with her and assist her with daily activities. I also knew that this would offer the best opportunity to achieve my goal of helping others and bringing them joy through volunteering.
What type of volunteer activities do you do at DOROT?
DOROT offers volunteers several ways in which they can assist the elderly. During the past year I have done different activities such as technology support, arts and crafts, and office work. In terms of technology support, I have helped seniors learn how to use their laptops and assisted several seniors with the use of their iPads. This worked out so well that I was matched with two older adults, Gail and Cyril, to provide weekly iPad assistance classes. Regarding arts and crafts, I spent time on birthday cards and gifts for upcoming birthdays of some senior citizens. I enjoy everything I do at DOROT and I am happy that I am able to assist Gail and Cyril.
In what ways has your DOROT volunteer experience impacted your life?
Volunteering at DOROT has brought joy to me. This helps me handle the stress that I get from high school. I am happy knowing that I am able to help others who appreciate me being there. They make me feel important. Although I am there to help them they are helping me, too.
What motivates you to continue volunteering at DOROT?
I am motivated to continue volunteering at DOROT because of the way it has impacted my life. I have brought happiness to others and they have brought happiness to me. I want to continue the relationships that I have developed at DOROT and continue to assist in any way I can.
Most memorable volunteer moment:
One day I was going to the seventh floor at DOROT to meet with Gail for an iPad assistance class when I was informed that the staff was going there as well to sing Gail a birthday song. I was told not to tell Gail so that it would be a surprise. After I went upstairs, I pretended like nothing was going to happen until the staff arrived. We sang “Happy Birthday” to Gail and took pictures with her. It was a great moment because everyone there was having fun.
What would you want other volunteers to know about volunteering at DOROT?
DOROT is a fun place to be. You get to create new relationships and it feels like being with a second family.
Anything else you would like to share?
Helping seniors is not only fun, it is also important. We all need to be loved and feel a sense of belonging; without that the world would be a sad place.
