Brooke Pierce — Homelessness Prevention Program
DOROT volunteer since: 2003
How did you get involved with DOROT?
I was looking to start doing some regular volunteer work, and, happily, I came across the DOROT website when I was searching online.
What type of volunteer activities do you do?
Every other Friday evening I serve meals to a group of seniors that are (or once were) part of DOROT’s Homelessness Prevention Program (HPP). I usually get to spend a lot of time chatting with the people there about everything from current events to the latest movies we’ve seen.
In what ways has your DOROT volunteer experience impacted your life?
Volunteering with DOROT has allowed me to interact with a lot of wonderful people from many different walks of life who I probably would have never come in contact with otherwise. Getting to hear the life stories and perspectives of people who are older than me has been a valuable and often fascinating learning experience.
What motivates you to continue volunteering at DOROT?
I think DOROT is doing incredibly important work in this city by lending a hand to folks in need, and I’m so happy to be able to help the organization in some small way. The chance to meet new people and to catch up with the “regulars” makes it a treat to come back again and again.
Most memorable volunteer moment?
I can’t really isolate a single moment, but some of my favorite moments are when everyone in the room gets into a big, animated discussion. There are many very smart, very opinionated men and women in the HPP, and it’s a lot of fun to hear them speak their minds.
What would you want other volunteers to know about volunteering at DOROT?
It’s a really rewarding experience that will give you the opportunity to spend time with tons of amazing people, from the people that DOROT serves to the dedicated DOROT staff.
