Edward Smith — Package Deliveries
How long have you been a DOROT volunteer?
How did you get involved with DOROT?
I came to DOROT with a team of volunteers from NY Cares for a Package Delivery.
What type of volunteer activities do you do at DOROT?
I primarily participate in the Package Deliveries - Rosh Hashanah, Thanksgiving, Winter and Passover. I’ve been visiting the same senior, Ms. N, for each program for years! I've began visiting her at least once a month for lunch. I also did Gift Wrapping at Barnes & Noble once.
In what ways has your DOROT volunteer experience impacted your life?
DOROT introduced me to Ms. N, a woman with a fascinating history and family history. Package Deliveries have become one of the touchstones of my schedule.
What motivates you to continue volunteering at DOROT?
I like to be helpful in ways that are genuinely meaningful. The fact that it is quite convenient for me is an unasked-for bonus.
Most memorable volunteer moment
My most memorable moment was when I visited Ms. N with a friend, Schlomo back in 2000 for the Chankuah Package Delivery. I remember the necklace she wore and she still wears it today. We went out with Ms. N to lunch that day, something she enjoyed doing a lot back then. Over the last 15 or so years, I’ve watched Kitty slowly decline. Since she had a stroke and is now bed-ridden, she does not go out anymore. Kitty now always makes certain to have lunch brought in for visitors. I plan on being there as close to the end as possible.
What would you want other volunteers to know about volunteering at DOROT?
Step up! It's fun and it is easy, and you bring joy to people you will enjoy meeting.
