Fern Efran - Friendly Visitor and Package Deliveries
How long have you been a DOROT volunteer?
I have been a Friendly Visitor for 17 years.
How did you get involved with DOROT?
I responded to an ad DOROT had in Time Out New York looking for volunteers for a Chanukah package delivery. That year I delivered a package to two homebound women, one of them was Eva. She was so engaging and brilliant (she has her doctorate and speaks four languages fluently) it was simply imperative to continue our relationship!
What type of volunteer activities do you do at DOROT?
I am a Friendly Visitor and deliver holiday packages.
In what ways has your DOROT volunteer experience impacted your life?
Our connection to one another is vital in enhancing and adding value to our lives, young and old. To be blessed to have a wonderful relationship with someone whom you share life’s experiences, spend caring moments and laughs together is immeasurable. This is what Eva and I truly have done throughout the years. Not to mention playing a card game or two or watching Jeopardy.
What motivates you to continue volunteering at DOROT?
Most memorable volunteer moment:
In addition to Eva’s heartfelt expression of gratitude for me being in her life, there is always a little something special that I leave with after a visit or phone call.
What would you want other volunteers to know about volunteering at DOROT?
DOROT simply cares! Their outreach to seniors is life affirming, this is all the reason in the world to become involved with any of the volunteer opportunities offered.
Give and you get back even more!
