Gary Shelton - Office Volunteer
How long have you been a DOROT volunteer?
I have been a DOROT volunteer since 2009.
How did you get involved with DOROT?
While trying to plan for my own retirement a friend/DOROT volunteer suggested DOROT as a worthwhile place to be a volunteer.
What type of volunteer activities do you do at DOROT?
My original assignment was as a Friendly Visitor and food shopper. In 2010 I became a Kol DOROT choir volunteer. I have also experience great joy helping out at DOROT’s annual Thanksgiving Banquet.
In what ways has your DOROT volunteer experience impacted your life?
Being a volunteer with DOROT has impacted my life in a very simple yet profound way. I have a greater sense of purpose and understanding of what it means to serve others.
What motivates you to continue volunteering at DOROT?
I am motivated to continue volunteering with DOROT because:
1. In some small way it feels like I am making a difference in people’s lives
2. I truly feel appreciated by the DOROT Staff
3. I am surrounded by music and singers who seem happy and transformed by this activity.
Most memorable volunteer moment:
A memorable moment that comes to mind was when I was a Friendly Visitor. The woman I visited said that she was very upset about a specific situation. As I gave her my full attention she eventually thanked me, saying that I had given her the opportunity to realize her own role in the situation.
What would you want other volunteers to know about volunteering at DOROT?
I’d like other volunteers to know that there are a variety of ways to help at DOROT. The staff will help you match your interests/skills with a volunteer assignment that meets both your needs and those of the participants.
