Jenny Edelman - Young Professional
How long have you been a DOROT volunteer?
I have been volunteering at DOROT for about five years. I started volunteering and doing package delivery when I graduated from college and moved back to New York City. One of my friends who was on the Young Professionals Leadership Circle thought I would be a good fit for their committee, and I joined the committee and fell in love with DOROT and the rest is history.
How did you get involved with DOROT?
Growing up in Manhattan I had always heard about DOROT and had seen the delivery bags on package delivery day, but I didn’t really get involved with DOROT until I moved back to New York after college. I got involved at the suggestion of friends on the Young Leadership Circle.
What type of volunteer activities do you do at DOROT?
I participate each year in the Thanksgiving banquet, package delivery, and I am a member of both the Young Professionals Leadership Circle and Next Dor. I have also attended Ballet Hispanico and other young professionals’ events.
In what ways has your DOROT volunteer experience impacted your life?
DOROT has impacted my life in that I have made incredible friends on the committees I serve on, but it also has enriched my life in the mentors I have received. Every senior I have visited with or sat with at an event has had some impact on my life. Those that I have seen time and time again have watched my transition from student to lawyer and have been as proud as my family.
What motivates you to continue volunteering at DOROT?
I have seen firsthand how a visit can brighten a senior’s day and truly make their week better. As a committee member I have heard from friends and participants how incredible their visits are and it is this incredible impact that DOROT has that makes me continue volunteering.
Most memorable volunteer moment:
One of my most memorable volunteer moments was at this year’s Thanksgiving banquet. The banquet itself is one of my favorite DOROT experiences, but this year was extra special because I had the same incredible ladies at my table who were at my table the previous year. They remembered me and it was like an entire year had not passed in between seeing each other. I greatly enjoyed their company and it was an incredible feeling to see them again this year and have them remember me and want to continue to hear about what was going on in my life.
What would you want other volunteers to know about volunteering at DOROT?
DOROT has an opportunity for everyone, depending on what type of time commitment you can make. The staff is incredible and supportive, and you are doing an incredibly valuable and rewarding deed.
