How long have you been a DOROT volunteer?
How did you get involved with DOROT?
My wife read an article about DOROT in a newspaper and shared it with me. I was very much impressed with what I read and I started making periodic contributions. Just after DOROT expanded its services into Westchester, I started volunteering.
What type of volunteer activities do you do at DOROT?
I visit weekly with a homebound senior. Initially I visited with a man for a few years until he passed away. I now visit with a retired school teacher who lives in Yonkers.
My wife and I also volunteer for the Holiday Package Deliveries and Shabbat Shalom Westchester.
In what ways has your DOROT volunteer experience impacted your life?
Volunteering at DOROT has given me a great deal of satisfaction and gratification. I simply enjoy visiting and having wonderful conversations with each senior. I enjoy talking about ourselves and our lives and what’s going on in the world.
What motivates you to continue volunteering at DOROT?
I’m retired now and am very active at the gym and playing tennis, etc. I want to give back to my community and make a difference. DOROT has become a significant part of that.
Most memorable volunteer moment:
My wife and I delivered a holiday package to a gentleman who was 100 years old! He shared his incredible life story with us and it has stood out in my mind since.
He was widowed at early age, and so was his second wife. Each had children from a previous marriage. They were then married for 50 years until she recently passed away.
He wanted to be doctor but couldn’t afford the cost of the schooling. He worked at the Post Office to support himself. He later became a teacher, too, holding both jobs. He was so impressive and so “up.”
We have visited with wonderful people through DOROT.
What would you want other volunteers to know about volunteering at DOROT?
It’s a wonderful experience. I feel so much enjoyment and fulfillment.
Making a contribution to those that are homebound and have restrictions in life has all been a wonderful experience.
I have always been very impressed with the organization and the people who work at DOROT.
