Kenny Seiler - Young Professional Leadership Circle/Friendly Visitor
How long have you been a DOROT volunteer?
I have been involved with DOROT as a volunteer for about three years.
How did you get involved with DOROT?
I made a decision in Winter 2013 to get more involved with service in my community. I saw an opportunity online to attend a bagel brunch and participate in a Package Delivery through the Young Professional’s group. It seemed perfect as I have always enjoyed interacting with seniors. The experience lived up to my expectations and spending time with a senior was the highlight of my day.
What type of volunteer activities do you do at DOROT?
I am a member of DOROT’s Young Professional Leadership Circle, which helps organize and plan events throughout the year. I am also a Friendly Visitor to a senior named Craig and visit him every week. I have volunteered with Package Deliveries, the Ballet Hispanico Dance Event, and the Thanksgiving Banquet.
In what ways has your DOROT volunteer experience impacted your life?
DOROT has given me an opportunity to give back in a positive and meaningful way. I have developed a true friendship with Craig (who is 43 years older than me) in a way that wasn’t possible before getting involved with DOROT. DOROT has definitely helped “bridge the gap” between generations.
What motivates you to continue volunteering at DOROT?
It always brings a smile to my face to see seniors smile, laugh, dance, sing, and enjoy life.
Most memorable volunteer moment:
My most memorable volunteer moment actually happens weekly - it involves watching English Premier League Soccer with Craig on the Upper West Side!
What would you want other volunteers to know about volunteering at DOROT?
Everyone involved with DOROT has such a great outlook on life. If you want some positive vibes, get involved with DOROT!
