Liane (Lili) Martins Lindner and children Olga and Max — Homelessness Prevention Program (HPP)
How long have you been a DOROT volunteer?
About one and a half years.
How did you get involved with DOROT?
I heard about DOROT’s Homelessness Prevention Program (HPP) through Gretchen Quinn. I met her during a cat adoption process, she spoke about DOROT and I thought there was a fit for us there.
What type of volunteer activities do you do at DOROT?
We volunteer at the HPP on Thursday evenings about once every month. We cook the meal and bring it there. We serve the food, sit and eat with clients. Then do the clean-up.
In what ways has your DOROT volunteer experience impacted your life?
We are not from NY and helping the local community is a great way to integrate. I believe it is very important to interact with other generations and people from different backgrounds and diverse life experiences. My kids and I are just happy and feel lucky to be trusted and welcomed into DOROT and the clients’ lives.
What motivates you to continue volunteering at DOROT?
It just feels right to do what we do. I love feeding people and put a lot of love into it. It is a great pleasure to bring a little something to others, even if it is just one home cooked meal. It feels really good to help and make people happy.
Most memorable volunteer moment
Every smile, handshake and hug we receive when we meet the people that join the dinners.
What would you want other volunteers to know about volunteering at DOROT?
That DOROT is an organization that makes a difference right here, right now. That it is a great environment to work in.
Anything else you would like to share?
I would like to stress how promoting the generations exchange makes experiences richer.
