Loretta Antosofsky — Friendly Visiting
DOROT volunteer since: 2008
How did you get involved with DOROT?
As a member of the Bikur Cholim Committee of West End Synagogue, I read an article in their newsletter announcing a liaison between DOROT and West End. I called for further information and felt that the partnership was both valuable and needed. I was most impressed by the outstanding services DOROT has to offer seniors.
What type of volunteer activities do you do?
I became a Friendly Visitor and enjoy it so much. Each week I look forward to visiting my Australian friend. He has wonderful stories about his career as a Film Editor, his life in Australia, and his extensive reading. He is a true Shakespeare lover and recommended many books for my husband to read.
In what ways has your DOROT volunteer experience impacted your life?
My senior has the most caring family. However, he fills with pride when he is able to share his experiences and knowledge with a new person. He certainly makes a positive impact on my life due to his enthusiasm for learning, even though he has many physical difficulties.
What motivates you to continue volunteering at DOROT?
My professional career has always been teaching and guiding children, and as a grandmother of 12 my world is very child centered. As a Friendly Visitor, I have gained greater insight into the needs of seniors: their need for companionship, intellectual stimulation, and time to relax and enjoy the moment.
Most memorable volunteer moment:
The most exciting and moving moment to me was the first time I delivered a Holiday Package. I was overwhelmed by the response of volunteers, seeing families with young children coming to visit seniors. What a wonderful experience for children! The visit gave me the opportunity to meet another senior, a bright and enthusiastic woman. We even shared the same career as Guidance Counselors. We remain in contact by telephone. Once again, this is a person who does not let her physical difficulties prevent her from being active. I continue to deliver Holiday Packages to her and always have a meaningful visit.
What would you want other volunteers to know about volunteering at DOROT?
Volunteering for DOROT is a most rewarding experience, but it takes commitment and dedication. It is important to be a good listener and to be sensitive to the seniors’ needs. Thanks to an outstanding staff of social workers, there is always someone to help you as a volunteer. The services that DOROT offers give seniors a sense that their lives have value and importance.
