Malene Duncan - Friendly Visiting
How long have you been a DOROT volunteer?
I’ve been a DOROT volunteer for just over six years.
How did you get involved with DOROT?
The University of Pennsylvania Alumni Association participated in DOROT's Thanksgiving Meal Delivery Program one year and through that I learned about the Friendly Visiting Program. I applied to be a volunteer shortly thereafter.
What type of volunteer activities do you do at DOROT?
I participate in the Friendly Visiting Program.
In what ways has your DOROT volunteer experience impacted your life?
In the time since I began volunteering with DOROT, I’ve experienced a number of significant life changes - I got married, had a baby and switched jobs. My experience being a Friendly Visitor has been a welcome consistent presence in my life against the backdrop of a lot of upheaval. In addition to my regular visits with Joy being anchoring for me, they’ve allowed me to be generally more open and comfortable with self-disclosure. I’ve also learned immensely from Joy, both substantively and from a relational perspective.
What motivates you to continue volunteering at DOROT?
I get so much out of visiting Joy. As mentioned, I have learned so much from Joy. More fundamentally, I truly value our friendship and simply look forward to having the opportunity spend time together.
Most memorable volunteer moment:
Joy and I attended a New York City Ballet performance in the fall of 2017. Despite having lived in New York for many years and having danced ballet in my youth, I never attended the ballet. I’ll be forever grateful to Joy for sharing that experience with me.
What would you want other volunteers to know about volunteering at DOROT?
I would want other volunteers to know that they will likely gain more out of volunteering than they give.
