Nora O’Brien - Package Delivery and Thanksgiving Banquet
How long have you been a DOROT volunteer?
I have been volunteering with DOROT since 2013.
How did you get involved with DOROT?
Before becoming a volunteer, I worked in the Volunteer Services Department at DOROT, where I was able to really experience the inner workings of the organization and see the impact of the work that they do. It's a great organization doing amazing work, and when my time as an employee came to an end, I knew that I wanted to stay in touch with the people I'd met and continue to support the mission they serve.
What type of volunteer activities do you do at DOROT?
I volunteer at the package deliveries and Thanksgiving Banquet.
In what ways has your DOROT volunteer experience impacted your life?
DOROT has helped me meet a lot of new people, and given me a stronger appreciation for the importance of volunteering. Without a strong volunteer force, a lot of important work that we often take for granted can't be done. I'm constantly inspired to keep working and do more by both my fellow volunteers and the hardworking staff at DOROT.
What motivates you to continue volunteering at DOROT?
Seeing the impact that this work has on seniors. My own grandmother was living alone for some time before moving to an assisted living facility several years ago, and the change that the sudden access to a real community made in her everyday life was wonderful. She was able to maintain her independence, but could easily socialize with neighbors over meals and coffees, to join book clubs and dinner clubs and keep experiencing the things she'd been missing while she was on her own. DOROT helps to make sure that seniors like my grandmother get the support, experiences, and friendships that everyone needs and deserves.
Most memorable volunteer moment:
After Hurricane Sandy, I visited several seniors who had lost power. One in particular was a woman who had a doctor's appointment she couldn't miss, but with no power in her building, she had to walk up and down eight flights of stairs on top of taking a bus to her appointment. I was very happy to be able to help her with this and some of her errands. Apparently, she was equally happy for the company, and in thanks for the help, she tried to set me up with her banker. Twice. And then with a volunteer from another organization that visited to bring her water. While her matchmaking didn't work, it's a memory that always brings a smile to my face.
What would you want other volunteers to know about volunteering at DOROT?
Volunteering at DOROT is an experience like no other, and you truly get back--at the very least--as much as you give. The staff members are organized, friendly, and passionate, which really transfers over to the volunteer experience. Best of all, though, is interacting with the people DOROT serves. Seniors have seen some incredible things, and most are happy to share their stories and experiences with someone willing to listen.
