Philip Meyers — Homelessness Prevention Program
DOROT volunteer since: March 2010
How did you get involved with DOROT?
A friend told me about it.
What type of volunteer activities do you do?
I provide the food, cook and serve meals one night each month at the Homelessness Prevention Program (HPP).
In what ways has your DOROT volunteer experience impacted your life?
It has provided me with an opportunity to help others in a very personal way. I have gotten great pleasure and satisfaction from interacting with the clients and the staff at DOROT.
What motivates you to continue volunteering at DOROT?
Knowing that I can assist others with basic necessities—food and companionship, and that they are very appreciative for it.
Most memorable volunteer moment?
No one event stands out but I get great personal pleasure from the positive feedback and obvious pleasure that the clients get from my efforts.
What would you want other volunteers to know about volunteering at DOROT?
Because of my involvement with DOROT, my son has gotten the students in his service learning club to participate as well. They have also cooked and served Thursday dinners at the HPP and some of them also visit and eat dinner with homebound elders. By all reports this has been a very positive experience for both clients and students.
