Ruth and Tim Murphy – Friendly Visiting
DOROT volunteer since: 2002
How did you get involved with DOROT?
We got involved with DOROT through our synagogue, participating in the Passover Package Delivery.
What types of volunteer activities do you do?
We participate in all the Holiday Package Deliveries and we are friendly visitors to 2 women, at least once a week.
In what ways has your DOROT volunteer experience impacted your life?
It has enriched our lives. We have made good friends and it helped us become more involved in the community.
What motivates you to continue volunteering at DOROT?
First, we enjoy doing it. DOROT is a fine organization to volunteer with and it gives us a sense of civic duty, like we need to do it.
Most memorable volunteer moment?
The husband of one of the women we visit passed away a while back. Before he died, he asked us to look after his wife. Just knowing that he depended on us and trusted us to look after his wife was tremendous. She also depended on us and trusted us because it was a very difficult time for her. There were a lot of little moments but they all mattered.
What would you want other volunteers to know about volunteering at DOROT?
It is very rewarding and fun. I encourage everyone to do it.
