Shoshana Rudnick Jaffess - Young Professional Leadership Circle

How long have you been a DOROT volunteer?

About 8 years ago, I started volunteering with DOROT. A few years later in 2011, I was asked to join the Young Leadership Circle.

How did you get involved with DOROT?

As a fortunate person I was privileged to know all four of my grandparents until I was 23. As a child I visited my grandparents (both sets) every week. In my teen years and 20’s, often I would visit my grandparents several times a week in addition to phone calls. Despite frequent visits from grandchildren, my grandparents looked forward to meeting new people and having visits from DOROT volunteers.

When my grandmother, Augusta Rudnick passed away, I was heartbroken and saw how lonely my grandfather was. Having seen people from DOROT come visit my grandparents for package delivery, I wanted to get involved and make other people’s grandparents day.

What type of volunteer activities do you do at DOROT?

Package Delivery will always have a special place in my heart and was the first volunteer activity I did with DOROT. Since then, I have loved volunteering at the Thanksgiving Banquet, visiting seniors, all of the Young Professionals events and most recently getting colleagues at my company to volunteer with the 9/11 Day of Service packing of packages for delivery.

In what ways has your DOROT volunteer experience impacted your life?

The friendships I have made with seniors and peers at DOROT go beyond the walls of DOROT. Now that all of my grandparents have passed, I am even more grateful when I get the opportunity to spend time with seniors. Since having my daughter, I have brought her along to volunteer and now the next generation is volunteering!

What motivates you to continue volunteering at DOROT?

I love to see the smile on the seniors’ faces. Even if all I do is put a smile on someone’s face it is worth it. It is fulfilling to brighten up someone else’s day.

Most memorable volunteer moment:

At the Young Professional Leadership Circle event Ballet Hispanico a few years ago a senior put her walker aside, and danced up a storm.

What would you want other volunteers to know about volunteering at DOROT?

DOROT is such an amazing organization that provides volunteer activities for everyone who wants to volunteer. You can volunteer as much or as little as you want. While DOROT is there to help the seniors, I believe I benefit from DOROT myself.
