Susan Warner – Homelessness Prevention Program
DOROT volunteer since: HPP volunteer since January 2009 but I had previously participated in the Holiday Package Deliveries with my family.
How did you get involved with DOROT?
I attended a dinner honoring the outgoing president of DOROT with someone who worked for the organization. I wanted to volunteer right after the banquet.
What type of volunteer activities do you do?
I volunteer with the Homelessness Prevention Program. I organize and cook meals for the Thanksgiving and holiday banquets. I am also a guest chef one week every month.
In what ways has your DOROT volunteer experience impacted your life?
Volunteering at DOROT has impacted my life immensely. The ability to help people hands-on has been more rewarding than any other volunteer experience I have had.
What motivates you to continue volunteering at DOROT?
The extraordinary clients are the greatest inspiration. The outlook and attitude towards life is truly inspirational.
Most memorable volunteer moment?
I remember asking one of the clients, “How is it living through the DOROT program?” He said, “It’s better than living on the D train.” This makes me want to continue giving and working with these people who can really benefit from my help.
What would you want other volunteers to know about volunteering at DOROT?
This is the first organization where I’ve been able to roll up my sleeves and see my direct impact and contribution. DOROT never takes anything for granted. It’s never about writing a check here but what you can do for the clients.
