Mark the upcoming 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence by renewing your commitment to civic engagement. In this four-part, non-partisan series, we’ll hear from experts and from one another on how to get motivated, informed and empowered to take part in civic and political life. Together, we’ll explore how to make sense of today’s landscape for civic participation, share smart strategies for following the news, discuss effective ways to make your voices heard and inspire each other to get moving! These sessions will be led by Emmy Award-winning journalist Claudine Hutton with guest speakers each week.

Session 1 (March 2): Where do I begin?
Guest Speaker: Rabbi Lindsey Danziger, Director of Campaigns, Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism
Taking the first step toward being active can feel overwhelming. For our first session, we’ll get past inertia and consider the values that will determine how and where we will dedicate our time, talents and energy.

Session 2 (March 9): How to make an impact
Guest Speaker: Diane Burrows, Speakers Bureau Chair and past Co-President, League of Women Voters of the City of New York
In this session we’ll explore different avenues for expressing our values and share tips for making sure our elected officials hear them loud and clear.

Session 3 (March 16): How to be a smart news consumer
Guest Speaker: Mikhael Simmonds, Editorial Coach, Solutions Journalism
Quality journalism is essential to a healthy democracy. In this session, we’ll break down the tech and social challenges that make it harder to get good information and hear expert tips on how to cut through the noise and stay well-informed.

Session 4 (March 23): How to make sure our votes count
Guest Speaker: Susan Lerner, Executive Director, Common Cause New York
Free and fair elections are the most fundamental expression of our political will. In this session we’ll talk about what can be done to ensure our votes and those of all Americans are protected.
