It takes an informed imagination to stand outside Lincoln Center at West 65th Street and Broadway and conjure the same neighborhood in the early twentieth century–when artists lived and worked at the Lincoln Arcade, fight fans cheered boxers at Sharkey s Athletic Club, and black and white gangs warred in the nearby streets of San Juan Hill. We ll enter that world in an illustrated lecture about the artist George Bellows, a great American painter who resided at the Lincoln Arcade. Looking closely at Bellows life and work, we ll uncover the place of the West Side in Black history and boxing. Led by Historian Rob Snyder.
