The vast landscapes and astonishing biodiversity of the Amazon River basin challenged European assumptions at a moment when modern science was just beginning to take shape. Focusing on the Age of Scientific Exploration (17th–19th centuries), this talk traces how journeys by naturalists such as Charles Darwin and Alexander von Humboldt placed Brazil at the center of a new understanding of the natural world. This scientific vision, in turn, inspired landscape painters such as Frederic Edwin Church and Martin Johnson Heade, who translated Brazil’s richness into images that helped shape how the tropics were seen and imagined.
