DOROT was featured on last night’s CBS Evening News as one of two organizations across the country effectively combatting social isolation and loneliness in older adults.
Recognizing DOROT as a leader in the field of intergenerational programs, the segment included interviews with two of our incredible teen interns, Mabinty Keita and Elizabeth Gerber, who shared how DOROT’s Teen Internship creates space for them to bridge the generational divide.
Through programs like the one featured in the story, “Roots and Reflections,” teen interns and older adults participate in discussions and hands-on activities, exploring their identities and perspectives while making meaningful connections.
As Elizabeth remarked, “It’s so easy to, just like, scroll on your phone for hours and kind of not realize you might be in a room with a bunch of people, and yet you’re not discussing anything.” That couldn’t be further from the experience for Elizabeth, Mabinty, and so many others while at DOROT.
We know that there is an epidemic of social isolation and loneliness in the U.S., especially among older adults, but we also know the answer. Social connections, like the ones highlighted in this story, have the power to truly transform lives.
This story was broadcast nationwide as part of the CBS Evening News Eye on America series. Watch the full video below:
