About GENuine Connections

DOROT’s GENuine Connections® is an online community devoted to building connections between older adults and high school students. What makes this special? The conversations that take place and the bonds that are formed when people of different generations come together and find common ground.

Through GENuine Connections, everyone learns from one another. Participants meet online in small-group workshops for  conversation and activities ranging from brain games, chess, art, current events, and more. The result is the discovery of new and shared perspectives. Workshops are led by DOROT facilitators and selected by participants based upon their interests.

When you partner with GENuine Connections, the older adults in your community will discover the power of intergenerational friendship.

This was such a fun and enlightening experience. I feel I’ve gained so much knowledge about others, the world, and myself.

We’d love to hear about your community and discuss the best option for engaging your constituents. Please fill out this form to tell us about your community, or email us at genuineconnections@dorotusa.org.

How Partnership Works

What does it mean to become a partner?  There are three main ways to bring GENuine Connections to the older adults in your community:

  • Share information about the program with your constituents. Here is a toolkit filled with ready-to-go marketing materials.
  • Help adults 65+ register for the best upcoming multi-session workshop for them. We offer support to help your constituents through the registration process including how to use Zoom.
  • Make an impact on your community with a customized program. We’ll work with you to design a one-time event or a workshop series that speaks to your mission and participants’ interest. Then we’ll recruit the teens who will join for these expertly facilitated sessions.

Once you’re signed on as a partner, we’ll feature your organization’s logo on our website.

GENuine Connections is meant to complement the other programs and communities that older adults are a part of, extending your impact through virtual programming. Our sessions run between 4-7 pm ET, when teens are done with school and many older adults are home.

How Older Adults Sign Up for GENuine Connections

  1. First, interested older adults (65+) register to be a part of GENuine Connections.

  2. Participants attend an orientation*, where we warmly welcome them into the GENuine Connections community, explain how the program works, and answer any questions (including Zoom-literacy questions) they may have.

  3. Once participants have attended an orientation, they can sign-up for one or more weekly workshops.
  4. Since this intergenerational community includes minors, every adult participant agrees to a quick background check (at no cost to them).

  5. Participants’ program registration is confirmed after their background check is completed.
  6. Each semester, they’re invited back to reconnect with former participants and to meet peers and teens.

*We can create orientations specifically for your community at times convenient to them.
