A Bountiful Purim

A Bountiful Purim
Volunteers for Purim
Volunteer Shanie Brodie, with her mom Aliza Herzberg Brodie, who delivered mishloach manot packages with her friends in honor of her bat mitzah.
Purim at DOROT was merry indeed this year, thanks to an unprecedented abundance of donated mishloach manot (Purim food packages). In the days before the holiday, volunteers and staff mobilized to distribute over 600 packages received from Actor’s Temple, Beit Rabban, Congregation Rodeph Sholom’s Purim Carnival, Rodeph Sholom School, Temple Emanuel of the City of New York, and Queens Hillel, and from Shanie Brodie and her friends, who assembled and delivered packages as part of Shanie’s bat mitzvah project. On Purim, Sunday, February 24th, 16 families personally delivered mishloach manot and visited with DOROT seniors to celebrate the holiday together.

The mishloach manot were filled with goodies, including favorites like grape juice, dried fruit, pretzels and hamantaschen (triangular filled cookies also known as “Haman’s ears”). They brought extra Purim joy to the seniors who participate in DOROT’s Homelessness Prevention Program and Aftercare, Kosher Meals for the Homebound, Lillie Schussheim Chaffkin Shabbos Meals Program, Lincoln House Outreach, Wellness Program, Kol DOROT, and other intergenerational programs.

DOROT is deeply grateful for the donations and for our community partners’ ongoing commitment to the well-being of frail older adults.
