Adriana Sisley — Teen Leadership Board President

DOROT volunteer since: I volunteered with my family when I was younger, but have volunteered on my own for the past two and a half years.

Adriana Sisley How did you get involved with DOROT?

I got involved as a teen after a few friends raved to me about the organization and specifically its “teen internship” program. I decided to apply and have been involved since!

What type of volunteer activities do you do?

I am the president of the teen board “Next Generation.” Our mission is to get more teen volunteers and really connect the teen and senior generations. Every year we plan an event for the end of the year. This past year we organized our own Package Delivery in which every teen board member solicited local stores for different objects to include in our packages. Then each volunteer went out with the few friends that they brought to share an experience with a senior. Throughout the year we also attend all of DOROT’s Package Deliveries, the amazing Thanksgiving Banquet, and a night called “Winter’s Eve” where we advertise DOROT in Columbus Circle.

In what ways has your DOROT volunteer experience impacted your life?

My DOROT experience has made me more aware of the senior population in New York. Also it has allowed me to have a similar connection with seniors in my neighborhood like I have with my own grandparents who live far away from me.

What motivates you to continue volunteering at DOROT?

It is definitely the connections that I make with the seniors that I meet. I love that I am able to listen to their interesting stories and share my own as well, thereby connecting to people who I may not see in my own daily life.

Most memorable volunteer moment?

My favorite volunteer memory is probably the two times I have volunteered at the Thanksgiving Banquet. The banquet includes a range of people who are connected to DOROT. It is truly amazing to all work together to create an event that is important to everyone involved. My favorite moment during the Banquet is when nearly everyone gets up to dance together. Seeing and hearing just how much everyone else is enjoying themselves adds to my own love of the event! During the Banquet it is quite evident how great an organization this is!

Anything else you would like to share?

Other volunteers should know that while DOROT requires commitment, it is probably one of the most rewarding and enlightening experiences to volunteer here.
