Ava Alterman - Package Delivery and Cemetery Visits
How long have you been a DOROT volunteer?
I’ve been a volunteer with DOROT since 2013.
How did you get involved with DOROT?
I received an announcement that DOROT was seeking volunteers for its Holiday Package Delivery program, while volunteering as a tutor in the JCC Gift of Math program. I remembered that my mother had enjoyed spending time with a Friendly Visitor from DOROT and thought this would be a wonderful way to give back and develop my own connection to DOROT.
What type of volunteer activities do you do at DOROT?
I have escorted seniors to cemetery visits and medical appointments, delivered Holiday/Meal Packages, worked at the Thanksgiving Banquet and stuffed lots of envelopes.
In what ways has your DOROT volunteer experience impacted your life?
I have been visiting the same couple since I started volunteering with DOROT and they have become family to me. They are both Holocaust survivors, with painful childhood memories, who now have to deal with the frailties and limitations that come with age. They amaze and inspire me with their warmth and optimistic attitude and their insistence on remaining active and interacting with all kinds of people.
What motivates you to continue volunteering at DOROT?
My commitment to making the world a better place by helping other people is so fundamental to my Jewish identity. But it doesn’t take a Talmudic scholar to realize that whatever good I think I do for someone else, I receive much more in return.
Most memorable volunteer moment:
During one of our yearly cemetery visits, the couple said they needed to ask me for a favor. They had recently purchased burial plots for themselves and wanted to see the location. They were so relieved after seeing the gravesites in person and so grateful to me for really such little effort on my part. I was touched that they asked for my help with this and was so happy to be able to ease their minds.
What would you want other volunteers to know about volunteering at DOROT?
Every DOROT activity I’ve participated in has been extremely well organized. Its dedicated staff members are particularly attentive to the needs of the clients. They are also incredibly supportive and appreciative of the volunteers.
Whatever amount of time and energy you have to devote to seniors, DOROT provides a wide range of volunteer opportunities to match your interests and abilities.
The need is great and the rewards even greater. Come find your place at DOROT!
