Jack Penso and Seraphine - Family and Youth Services
How long have you been a DOROT volunteer?
Seraphine and I started volunteering about four years ago, though I had been a friendly visitor years before that.
How did you get involved with DOROT?
When Seraphine turned four I wanted her to experience the pleasure of making others happy and DOROT is the perfect platform for it.
What type of volunteer activities do you do at DOROT?
We deliver packages to elderly and visit with them.
In what ways has your DOROT volunteer experience impacted your life?
New York is full of interesting people with amazing life stories and if it weren’t for DOROT we would never meet the ones we did. DOROT literally enhanced our lives and provided us with inspiration.
What motivates you to continue volunteering at DOROT?
It’s important for me that Seraphine understands volunteering and trying to bring a smile to others is a lifelong effort. So continuity is crucial. It’s also priceless to see without exception all our hosts' faces light up when Seraphine gives them a big hug.
Most memorable volunteer moment:
We had one host play violin for us, another show us her paintings and almost all our hosts offer Seraphine cookies and juice. We are so appreciative to see our hosts paying so much attention to us during our visit.
What would you want other volunteers to know about volunteering at DOROT?
It’s a privilege to volunteer with DOROT and meeting people with diverse life stories. It’s enriching in many ways and provides a perspective to meet the challenges we have in our daily lives.
Anything else you would like to share?
I urge parents to participate in at least the package delivery programs with DOROT. The programs are very well organized and the few hours spent together with your child paying attention to someone other than yourselves is an invaluable experience.
