Lila Reid — Teen Internship
How long have you been a DOROT volunteer?
I’ve been volunteering at DOROT for about a year.
How did you get involved with DOROT?
I began volunteering at DOROT first to fulfill community service requirements at school, but then continued volunteering after I met the requirements. A family friend suggested DOROT, and I was immediately interested in the organization.
What type of volunteer activities do you do at DOROT?
This past school year, I’ve been a part of the Teen Internship Program where I went on weekly visits to seniors. DOROT has many events during the year that I’ve enjoyed, such as an Intergenerational Event where students and seniors make a quilt, and a chess program. The chess program has been one of my favorite events, and has connected me to Elaine who I’ve been teaching chess to. More recently I was a part of the Summer Internship where there were so many different activities besides from going on visits. I’ve really enjoyed every activity here!
In what ways has your DOROT volunteer experience impacted your life?
My DOROT volunteer experience has greatly impacted my life because I’ve joined a new community with people of all ages, and each time I volunteer I leave happy. It is also nice knowing that you have brightened someone’s day, and have made an impact in someone’s life.
What motivates you to continue volunteering at DOROT?
I’m motivated to continue volunteering because of all the past experiences I’ve had so far. I really like being a part of this friendly and large community.
Most memorable volunteer moment
My most memorable volunteer moment was during one of the Chess Programs, where I was playing a very experienced senior who played chess every Friday. After every time I moved one of my pieces, he would explain to me either a mistake I made and what he would have done, or why it was a good move. By the end I learned so much, just from one game!
What would you want other volunteers to know about volunteering at DOROT?
I would want other volunteers to know that the experiences from DOROT are really special and memorable.
