DOROT Westchester

Norman Reiss - Occasional Volunteer Corps

How long have you been a DOROT volunteer?

I’ve volunteered for DOROT in multiple capacities since 2012.

How did you get involved with DOROT?

Not sure, but it may have been my involvement with NY Cares which offers short term volunteer opportunities at many organizations.

What type of volunteer activities do you do at DOROT?

Since I work in technology, I’ve used DOROT’s Computer Tutor program as a way to help seniors who need help in using the Internet to do things that many of us take for granted. I also make phone calls to arrange and participate in holiday package deliveries and help at the annual Thanksgiving banquet.

In what ways has your DOROT volunteer experience impacted your life?

Even though most of my interactions with DOROT clients are short term, I often get very attached to the seniors I work with. I find that their viewpoints and experience offer me a different perspective on life. They are always so appreciative of my help; it’s a pity that so many seniors reach a point in their lives where they’ve lost many of their family and friends and often find it difficult to make new connections.

What motivates you to continue volunteering at DOROT?

I consider service and volunteering an integral part of my life, and plan to continue working with seniors when I eventually retire from my main gig in nonprofit technology.

Most memorable volunteer moment:

I don’t have one particular memory, but my favorite DOROT activity is the Thanksgiving Banquet, when I work as a waiter. Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday because it reminds me to be grateful for what I already have. It’s especially nice to participate in such a festive celebration for many seniors who may not have the big family gatherings they may have had in the past.

What would you want other volunteers to know about volunteering at DOROT?

It’s really not about what the senior gets from us, it’s more about what we receive from the seniors. They have so much to share and offer it’s nice to be able to remind them that their opinions and thoughts are valued and appreciated.

Anything else you would like to share?

Thank you DOROT for this wonderful honor! I’ve always felt very appreciated for the service that I do, but getting this recognition is especially nice.
