Victoria Rosenthal Kristy – Lincoln House Outreach
DOROT volunteer since: 2008
How did you get involved with DOROT?
DOROT staff member Lucille Bruto saw me on a bus, knitting. We struck up a conversation and I learned that Lincoln House Outreach was looking for someone to knit with seniors. I attended the activities once a month. I thought it would be nice in both ways since I like to knit and it also feels good teaching others something that I enjoy. I also like the fact that the women create a fellowship with each other while doing something they are interested in.
What type of volunteer activities do you do?
Besides knitting for fun, I also knit for charity. 95% of my knitting gets donated. I love being a benefit to others.
In what ways has your DOROT volunteer experience impacted your life?
I’ve had the opportunity to meet people I would have never met before. You get to see how much value there is in exchanging information with others and listening to find out what really matters to them.
What motivates you to continue volunteering at DOROT?
I like people and it’s satisfying to be able to pass on something I like to do to people who enjoy it.
Most memorable volunteer moment?
When you demonstrate something you know how to do but you don’t think much of it because its second nature to you but the person who is watching is taking in every step carefully. It is exciting to see others realize they can learn this skill. I don’t even realize it’s that big of a deal sometimes.
What would you want other volunteers to know about volunteering at DOROT?
Nothing is as precious as being able to share your passion. It really makes the world go forward.
