About the Pearls of Wisdom

The Pearls of Wisdom are an audition-based group of older-adult storytellers who perform for and engage with communities in person throughout New York City, and virtually throughout the country.

The Pearls promote intergenerational conversation and encourage audiences to share their own personal stories and experiences. Whether performing solo or in pairs, the Pearls bring the art and impact of storytelling to community spaces, such as older adult centers, libraries, schools, and other neighborhood and cultural institutions.

Each performance is designed with the specific venue and audience in mind (the Pearls work with kindergarteners to centenarians!), with program themes selected in collaboration with the partnering organization. Special performances can also be arranged to mark the observance of particular holidays—such as Black History Month and Women’s History Month—and other dates of significance throughout the year.

The Story of a pearl

Every story has a beginning, middle and end. It’s a lesson Thelma Ruffin Thomas, Artistic Director of the Pearls of Wisdom, instilled in all her storytelling students. The Pearls of Wisdom are a troupe of older adult storytellers based at DOROT. They perform at schools, libraries, older adult centers and other venues all over the city, sharing their life experiences and love of stories with communities of all ages.
When I listen to your story, I learn about you, and I find out we have something in common.
